生垣 / Hedge
どの木を生垣に使うかを検討するにあたり、以下を考慮しました。
１）日本原産の木か、外国産の木か
２）花が咲くものか、咲かないものか
３）常緑樹か、落葉樹か
４）生垣の高さは何メートルほどか
まず１）については、家が和風建築であり、内庭ほどではないにしても、この庭も基本は和の木々でというポリシーで植樹してきたので、生垣にも日本原産の木を使うべきと考えました。
２）については、花壇にたくさんの花が咲く予定なので、生垣は花が咲かなくてもいいか、もしくは、花壇の花は春に咲くものが多いので、夏や秋に咲くものがあればそれもいいかもです。
３）については、常緑樹の方がいいような気がしますが、秋に色付く落葉樹も悪くはありません。
４）については、生垣で目隠しをしたい訳ではないので１メートル程度の低い生垣でいいと思いました。
以上の条件で調べてみたところ、候補は、ツゲ、マキ、サツキ、ツツジ、椿、金木犀、など。
ツゲ、マキは和の常緑樹で一般的なものですが、あまり特色がないためわざわざ花壇に作る必要があるかなというところです。
サツキやツツジもありふれていますが、花が咲きます。ただし時期は春。
椿は常緑樹で冬に花が咲き、私はすごく好きですが、問題はチャドクガという害虫がつきやすく、体に触れるとかぶれてしまうため、花壇の生垣にはどうかな…というところ。
金木犀も常緑で、秋にとてもいい匂いの花が咲き大好きですが、内庭に2本植わっているのと、すぐに大きくなってしまいそうなところがいまいち・・・
いろいろ考えた結果、ドウダンツツジにしました！これは春に白い花が咲き、秋には葉が赤く紅葉して大変きれいで、手入れもしやすく、それほど大きくもならず、ちょうど条件に合いました。
In considering which tree to use for the hedge, we considered the following:
1) Is it a Japanese tree or a tree from other country?
2) Whether it has flowers to bloom or do not bloom
3) Evergreen or deciduous tree
4) How high is the hedge?
For 1), the house is a Japanese-style building, and we have been planting the trees with the policy that it is basically Japanese trees although this garden does not have as much Japanese style as the inner garden. Considering this, we thought it should be good to use Japanese trees for hedges.
For 2), many flowers are going to bloom in the flowerbed, so flowers are not necessary for hedges. Or we may have one that blooms in summer or autumn since many flowers in the flowerbed bloom in spring.
For 3), we thought that evergreens are better, but deciduous trees that are colored in autumn are not bad either.
For 4), we don’t need to blindfold with a hedge, so we think that a hedge around 1 meter would be fine.
Under the above conditions, the candidates are boxwood, maki, azalea, camellia, osmanthus fragrans, etc.
Boxwood and Maki are common Japanese evergreens hedges with no flowers. This can be too boring to be made as a hedge in the flowerbed.
Azaleas are also common, but flowers bloom. However, the time is in spring.
The camellia is an evergreen tree that blooms in winter, and I really like it, but the problem is that it is vulnerable with the pest called tea tussock moth, and if we touch it, we will get a rash.
Osmanthus fragrans is also evergreen, and I love the flowers that smell very good in Autumn. Only the concern is it grows fast. Also, we already have two of them in the inner garden.
As a result of various thoughts, we chose Enkianthus perulatus!
This has white flowers in spring and red leaves in autumn, which is very beautiful. This is easy to care for, and not growing too fast.
庭造り計画の続き / Continuation of gardening plan
夏が終わって涼しくなり、雑草の成長スピードもずいぶん遅くなりました。また、秋は球根や苗を植えるのに適した時期でもあります。
今年の春夏の経験と反省を活かして、翌春には満開の花が咲き、雑草はほとんど生えない状況をつくるべく、この秋冬のうちに庭造り計画を進めることにしました。
まず、庭造り計画を更新しました。ずっとやりたかったことは、花壇を大きくして、桜の木の下に花をたくさん植えることです。そこで再び、近所の庭師さんに花壇の土を追加で購入できるか聞いてみました。（答えはもちろんOKでした）
ガーデニング関連の本をたくさん読みビデオを見て、花壇の端に小川に沿って生垣を作るのがいいのではないかと思いました。その場合、どの木で生垣を作るかが問題です。もっと調べてよく考えないと！
Now summer is over and it’s getting cooler, weeds are growing much slower.
Autumn is also a good time to plant bulbs and seedlings for next spring.
Taking advantage of this spring-summer experience and reflection, we decided to proceed with our gardening plan during this fall and winter in order to create a garden where flowers in full bloom next spring and weeds will hardly grow.
First, we updated our garden plan. What I have been longing for is to create a big flower bed and to plant flowers under the cherry blossoms trees. So, again, we asked the neighbor gardener if we can purchase soils for the flower bed. (The answer was of course Yes!)
I read many books and watched many videos about gardening, and thought it should be a good idea to create the hedge along the stream. Then, the issue was, what kind of tree should be used for the hedge? We need further research.
庭木の剪定 / Pruning of Garden Trees
内庭の木々が茂って見苦しくなっていたこと、放っておくと害虫の住処になりそうなこと、前の持ち主の方は毎年剪定を依頼していたとのことから、近所の庭師さんに剪定をお願いしました。
正直なところ、どれが雑草か、いったい何の木が植わっているのかもわからない状況だったので、木の名前を教えて頂くとともに、弱ってしまっている木などは伐採し、これから自分たちで内庭も作り上げていくことにしました。
We asked the neighbor gardener to prune the trees in the inner garden as we understood;
– the previous owner had requested pruning every year
– the trees were unsightly, and
– it could be a home for pests if we don’t care the garden.
To be honest, we didn’t know which plants were considered as weeds and what kind of trees were planted, so we asked the gardener the name of the trees. Also, we decided to cut down the weakened trees and to remake the inner garden by ourselves.
収穫の秋 – お米 / Autumn Harvest – Rice
辺りの田んぼでは、5月に植えられた稲が育ち、金色に輝いて収穫のときを迎えています。
お米を収穫した後の稲藁は畑や庭で使えるのではないかと思い、お米を買わせて頂いている近所の方に稲藁を貰えないか聞いてみました。すると、今日の午後一番に収穫する田んぼがあるので、そこに来たら好きなだけ持って帰っていいとのことで、伺うことにしました。
In the rice fields around our house, the rice planted in May has grown enough and is shining golden at the time of harvest in September.
I had an idea that the rice straw after harvesting the rice could be used in our gardens, so I asked the neighbor who we bought the rice if we could get the rice straw. He said, he is going to harvest the rice in the field near our house this afternoon, so if I came there, I can take as much as I like. Thus, I decided to visit the field.
稲の収穫を間近で見るのは初めてです。外側から内側に向かって刈り取っていくようでした。私の他にも稲藁を貰いに来ている人がいて、話を伺ったところ、稲藁でお正月飾りを作るんだそうです。
This is the first time I have seen the rice harvest up close. It seemed to cut from the outside to the inside. There are some people who come to get rice straw, and when I talked to them, they said that they would make and sell New Year’s decorations with rice straw.
稲藁を貰うにはどうしたらいいかわからなかったので、とりあえず他の方々と同じように、田んぼの外側で待機して、収穫が終わったところから順に稲藁を集めて束ねました。が、、、、これがかなりの重労働でした。軽い気持ちで、稲藁を貰おう！と思ったのですが、当然ながら自分で拾って集めるんですね。けっこうお歳を召された方も集めてらっしゃって、負けてはいられない！とはりきりましたが、農業は大変だと実感するとともに、翌日は筋肉痛になりました。
I didn’t know what I should do to get the rice straw, so I waited outside the rice field just like everyone else, and collected and bundled the rice straw in order from the place where the harvest was finished. This was very hard work. I got an idea to get rice straw without thinking the details of how to get it, but of course I am the one who pick it up and collect it. There are also people who are quite old but very active, so I thought I can’t afford to lose! Next day I had muscle pain in the legs and arms….
収穫の秋 – 栗 / Autumn Harvest – Chestnuts
収穫の秋、丹波栗を育てていらっしゃるご近所の方に栗を頂いたので、焼き栗をしてみました。魚焼きグリルで焼きましたが、ほっこりして美味しい！
栗林をお持ちの別のご近所さんが、誰も拾わないから好きに拾ってくださいと仰って下さったので、お言葉に甘えて9月は毎週末、山ほどの栗を拾いました。秘密兵器？のクリクリ坊主を手に入れ、おそらく1000個くらい栗の皮を剥きました。こんなに栗の皮を剥いたのは人生で初めて！ですが、渋皮煮や栗ご飯を作って食べました。秋の味覚、美味しかったです。
来年は栗を売れないかな…と思い、少し調べてみたところ、リアカーでの行商であれば許認可は要らないとのこと。リアカー買おうかな？！
In the harvesting autumn, we got chestnuts from a neighbor who grows Tanba chestnuts. We tried roasted chestnuts using fish roaster. It was delicious!
Another neighbor who owns a chestnut forest asked us to pick them up as we like because no one picks them up, so we did it and obtained a lot of chestnuts every weekend in September. I probably peeled about 1000 chestnuts, which was the first time in my life to do it that much. I cooked chestnut rice, marron glacé, etc. We enjoyed the taste of the autumn season very much.
I was wondering if we could sell chestnuts in the city next year. I researched a little and found that if it was a peddling, no permission was required. Should we buy a handcart?!
ジャガイモの秋植え / Autumn Planting of Potatoes
ジャガイモの秋植えに挑戦しました。9月上旬に植えて11月に収穫するとのこと。また、9月はまだ地温が高く腐りやすいため、種芋は半分に切らずにそのまま植えるとのことで、やってみました。元気に育つといいな。
We tried to plant potatoes in autumn. It will be planted in early September and harvested in November. As we heard that the soil temperature is still high in September and it is perishable, we planted the seed potatoes as they are without cutting them in half. We hope them growing up well.
砂利の敷設 / Gravel Road
家の門の前や庭に続く道には砂利が敷かれていますが、小粒でほとんどが流出し、雨が降れば水たまりができ、雑草や苔も生えてメンテナンスに手がかかるため、以前より新たに砂利を追加したいと思っていました。
庭木を植えて頂いた庭師さん に相談したところ、庭のエクステリアもやって下さるとのことだったので、お願いすることにしました。
砂利は少し高かったのですが、おかげですごくきれいになり、ついでにサービスで石垣の隙間があいていて修理が必要だったところも埋めて下さりました。
これで来年の春夏は、雑草との戦いが少し減るはずです。
We have a gravel road in front of the gate of the house and on the road to the garden, but most of the small particles flow out, and when it rained, puddles formed, weeds and moss grew, and we needed much time for maintenance. As such, we wanted to add new gravel.
We consulted with the gardener who planted the garden trees. He said that he would also do the exterior of the garden, so we decided to ask him.
The gravel was a little expensive, but the road became very good, and kindly he filled in the gaps in the stone walls that needed repairs for free.
We are expecting this should reduce our workload against weeds next spring and summer.
