初雪 / First Snow

最後の収穫を終えた日の夜から雪が降り始め、翌朝には積もっていました！
この冬、初めての雪だったので、積もっているのが嬉しく、散歩していろいろ写真を撮りました。
お昼過ぎには溶けてしまいましたが、雪景色も綺麗でした。

It began to snow the night after the last harvest and was piled up the next morning!
It was the first snow this winter, I was happy that it was piled up, went out a walk and took some pictures. Although it melted after noon, the snow scene was beautiful.

2021年最後の収穫 / Last Harvest in 2021

畑に残っていた大根と人参を収穫し、これで今年の収穫はすべて終わりました。
次は3月頃から始める予定ですが、それに向けて雑草を抜き、土を少し耕しました。
年明けにはもう少し耕す予定ですが、とりあえず今年はこれで終了です。
去年の今頃は何もなかった状態から、土を入れて頂き、ライ麦を植えてすき込んだり、もみ殻を混ぜたり して土を作り、オクラ、インゲンマメ、大根、シソ、人参、サツマイモ、ジャガイモ… と、初めてにしてはよく出来たと思います。
来年は今年の経験を活かして、もっとよく作れるように頑張ります！

We harvested the radishes and carrots that remained in the kitchen garden, which was the last harvest of this year.
We removed some weeds still there despite winter cold temperature in order to prepare for the next year planting. We will start it around March, and before that, we plan to cultivate the soil to be ready for that.
Taken into consideration that there was nothing in the garden around this time last year, we did well. We obtained the soil from the gardener, planted rye and plowed it in, mixed rice husks to make soil, and grew vegetables such as okra, green beans, radishes, perilla, carrots, sweet potatoes, potatoes… It was well done for the first time.
Next year, we will do our best and progress by using this year’s experience.

ジャガイモの収穫 / Potato Harvest

9月上旬に植えたジャガイモを収穫しました！
11月下旬に一度掘ってみましたが、まだ実が小さかったので、寒さ対策に寒冷紗を被せて12月半ばまで待ったところ、十分大きく育ちました！
これから冬の料理に大活躍しそうです＾＾

We harvested the potatoes we planted in early September.
I dug it once in late November, but the potato was still small, so I decided to wait until mid-December by covering the potatoes with a lawn cloth to prevent them to be damaged by frost. Now it grew big enough! We can use them in winter cooking.

カリンを植えました！ Planting Karin (Chinese quince) tree

果樹エリアの木の種類を増やしたかったので、カリンの小さい木を植えました。相変わらず地中は石だらけで固く、掘るのは大変でした。。。
4-5月に花を咲かせ、秋に黄色い実をつけるようです。残念ながら実は食べられませんが、カリン酒やジャムを作れます。
実をつけるまで何年かかるかわかりません（数年ならいいな…）が、楽しみです！

We planted a small Karin (Chinese quince) tree as we wanted to have more fruit trees in our garden. As usual, many stones were buried in the ground, and it was very hard to dig…
Anyway, this blooms in April to May and then bears yellow fruits in autumn. The fruit looks delicious but not edible, rather we use this for making liqueurs or jams.
I’m not sure how long it takes to bear fruit (hope within a few years) but very looking forward to it.

玉ねぎとニンニク / Growing Onion and Garlic

秋は玉ねぎとニンニクを植え付ける時期です。玉ねぎもニンニクも好きだし、あれば便利なので、ぜひ育てたいと思ったのですが、冬の間に再度、畑の土を耕したく、そうすると何も植えていない方がいいのでどうしたものかと思っていました。
すると、ご近所の方が、親切なことにその方の畑の空いているところで植えますか？と言って下さりました。
ありがたくお願いし、10月の終わりに玉ねぎの苗50本とニンニク20個を植え付けました。（しかも植え付け前に畑に黒マルチを被せて下さっており、私たちはほんとに植えただけでした…）

12月になり、畑の様子を見に行ったところ、玉ねぎもニンニクも順調に育っていました。ただ、、、、雑草もです。黒マルチで覆っているにもかかわらず、ほんの隙間の土を見つけてはえてくるなんて、雑草の生命力に驚きです。寒い冬に頑張ってはえてますが、立派な玉ねぎとニンニクを育てたいので抜かせて貰いました。

Autumn is the time to start growing onions and garlic. As we like them and it should be convenient to keep them all the time, we wanted to try it. However, the issue was, we also wanted to fertilize the soil in our kitchen garden during winter.

Then, our neighbor kindly asked us if we want to grow onions and garlic in his farm. Our answer was of course Yes!
We planted 50 onion seedlings and 20 garlics next to his, which was late October, and before we did, he would prepare the place by covering the soil with mulch to keep the soil warm and to prevent weeds growth.

Now in December, both onions and garlic are growing well, but weeds as well. Despite covering the soil with mulch, weeds robustly found the place and rooted around. How strong they are! Sorry for weeds, but we pull out you as we want to have good onions and garlic.

ストーンサークル？ Stone Circle?

来年の春に備えて、冬の間にキッチンガーデンの土を耕したく、冬の間も枯れないハーブ（ネギやニラなど）を他の場所に移したいと思いました。
どこに移すべきかよーく考え、そうだ！果樹（柿と梅）の周りに土を入れてハーブ畑のような感じにしよう！と思いつきました。
さっそく果樹の周りに石を並べて土を入れる準備をしてみましたが… 原始人が作ったストーンサークルみたいになってしまいました。苦笑
まあ、めげずに、とりあえず土を入れてハーブを移植してみます。

In preparation for the coming spring, we want to fertilize the soil in kitchen garden during winter and decided to move some herbs from kitchen garden. We’ve been thinking where they should go and got an idea to create a herbal bed around fruit trees.
Then, we arranged the stones around the trees, but…. it looks like a stone circle made by a primitive man….
Anyway, we will put soil and move the herbs by hoping this will make the place look better.

冬支度 / Winter preparation

本格的に冬が来る前に、炬燵布団を作った残りの布でポットカバーを作りました。
これで暖かいお茶が飲めます＾＾

Before winter comes in earnest, I made a pot cover with the remaining fabric used for kotatsu duvet. Now we are ready to drink hot tea!
