花壇の植栽３- 低木 / Flowerbed planting 3
既に植わっている桜と梅の邪魔にならない低木を植えるにあたり、候補にあがったのは次の植物でした。
ハマナスは、初夏にピンクの花が咲き、秋には赤い実がなって食用にもなるとのことで、いいなと思ったのですが、庭師さんに相談してみたところ、かなり痛い棘があるため、手の届きにくい場所に植えた方がいいとのことでした。花壇の真ん中に植えようと思っていたので、残念ながらハマナスはやめました。
クチナシは、これも初夏に大変いい香りの白い花が咲くとのことでいいと思いました。が、虫がつきやすいらしく、週末しかお手入れできない私たちにはちょっと難しいため諦めました。
ニワウメは、５月にピンクの花が咲いた後、赤い実がなり、さらに秋には紅葉するようで、長期間楽しめ、かつ、丈夫で育てやすそうなため、植え付けることにしました。
紫陽花は、私の好きな花で、６月の梅雨の中ひっそりと咲く姿に魅了されているのですが、残念ながらうちの庭は南西に開けており、日中ずっと直射日光が当たるため、日陰が好きな紫陽花には環境が厳しそうなので諦めました。
沈丁花は、常緑で、２－３月に香りのいい花を咲かせ、育てやすそうだったので植えてみることにしました。
ハナミズキは、春にピンクの花が咲き、秋には紅葉し、矮性の品種では樹形もコンパクトにまとまるようだったため、植えてみることにしました。
ヤマブキは、山吹色の語源になった黄金色の花を春に咲かせ、ピンク系の花が多い中、異なった色の花が咲くのがいいなと思ったのと、万葉集の時代にもよく詠まれていることから、植えてみることにしました。
以上、植えることにしたのは、ニワウメ、沈丁花、ハナミズキ、ヤマブキです。
The following plants were candidates for our flowerbed, which would not interfere with the cherry blossoms and Japanese apricots that had already been planted.

For Rosa rugosa, pink flowers bloom in early summer and red fruits become edible in autumn, so I thought we can have flower not in spring but in summer and enjoy the fruits in autumn. However, when I consulted with the gardener, he said there were quite painful thorns and it is better to plant it in a place that is hard to reach.
As such, I decided not having this shrub in our garden as I wanted to plant it in the middle of the flowerbed.
Gardenia has white flowers with a very nice scent, which will bloom in early summer. However, this plant will easily be liked by pest insects, that is a bit difficult for us to take care as we can only spend our time in garden on weekends.
Japanese bush cherry has red fruits after the pink flowers bloom in May, and the leaves turn red in autumn. We can enjoy this plant for long time. Also, it is strong and easy to grow. We decided to plant this.
Hydrangea is my favorite flower, and I am fascinated by its quiet blooming in the rainy season in June, but unfortunately our garden is open to the southwest and is exposed to direct sunlight throughout the day. I gave up because the environment seems to be harsh for hydrangea, which likes shade.
Daphne odra is evergreen, and it blooms fragrant flowers in February-March. It also easy to grow. We decided to plant this.
For Cornus florida, pink flowers bloom in spring, colored leaves in autumn, and the dwarf varieties have a compact tree shape, so we decided to plant this.
Kerria Japonica has golden flowers in spring, which was the origin of the color called “Yamabuki”. I thought it would be good to have flowers of different colors while there are many pink flowers in our garden. Also, this plant is often appeared in the poems created in ancient time, that means ancient people also loved this. We decided to plant this.
As above, we decided to employ Japanese bush cherry, Daphne odra, Cornus florida and Kerria Japonica.
花壇の植栽２- 花 / Flowerbed planting 2 – Flowers
まず実施したのは、前から憧れていた、球根を木の周りに植えることでした。
日本原産から少し外れてしまいますが、チューリップ、クロッカス、スイセン、ムスカリ、スノードロップなどの球根を桜の周りに植えました。春が楽しみです！
ただ、少し失敗したのは、10月半ばはまだ暖かくて、ムスカリなどの芽が出てしまったことです。これだと葉ばかり立派になってしまうようです。また、チューリップは、日本は5月以降、急激に気温が上がり暑くなって球根が傷んでしまい、翌年も花を咲かせるのに十分な栄養を蓄えることができず、毎年球根を買い替える必要があるみたいです。
春に咲く花が多いので、夏はどうしようかと思っていたところ、近所の方に野に植わっていたテッポウユリの苗を頂きました。ちなみに、種も採れましたが、ひと房にびっくりするほどの量の種が詰まっていました。ユリは種と株の両方で増えるとは知りませんでした。
The first thing I did was plant the bulbs around the tree, which I had always admired. Although it is a little different from the Japanese origin, we planted bulbs such as tulips, crocuses, daffodils, muscari, and snowdrops around the cherry blossoms. I’m looking forward to spring!
However, what I failed a little was that it was still warm in mid-October and muscari sprouted. With this, it seems that only the leaves, not flowers, will be splendid.
Also, it seems that tulips need to be replaced every year because the temperature in Japan has risen sharply from May and the bulbs are damaged and cannot be stored enough to bloom the next year.
Many flowers bloom in spring, so I was wondering what should be for summer. Then, I got a seedling of wild Easter lily from a neighbor!
By the way, I didn’t know that lilies would grow in both seeds and strains. I also got a flower bunch that was packed with a surprising amount of seeds.
このほか、ホームセンターで売っていた桔梗とリンドウの苗を衝動買いしてしまいました。紫の小さい花が咲いていて素敵でした。
近所の庭師さんにクリスマスローズとガーデンシクラメンの苗を頂いたので、それらも植えました。
黄色い花が素敵で新春を告げる福寿草（注文中）、ミヤコワスレなども植えました。
春が楽しみです！
In addition, I bought the bellflower and gentian seedlings that were sold at a shop on impulse. It was lovely to see small purple flowers in bloom.
I got a seedling of Christmas rose and garden cyclamen from the neighbor gardener.
We also planted Fukujusou (ordering), which have wonderful yellow flowers and announce the new year, and Miyakowasure.
I’m looking forward to spring!
雑草対策 ヘアリーベッチ / Hairy vetch for weeds control
いろいろな方のブログなどを参考に、果樹エリアにヘアリーベッチの種をまくことにしました。
まず夫が、しつこく生えている雑草を抜き取ってくれましたが、この作業にほぼ１ヵ月かかり、10月中に種を撒ききれず、一部は11月になってしまいました。ちゃんと芽が出るかな・・・
また、本来は種を撒いた後に土を被せるべきかと思いますが、固くてなかなか掘れないので、水をやって軽く踏圧するのがやっとでした。
こんな状況ですが、早めに撒いた場所は１～２週間で目が出て根付いていました！
ちょっと生え方がまばらなので、このままあまり生えてこないようであれば、3月に余っている種を追い撒きしようと思います。
来年の春夏は雑草を抑制してくれると嬉しいな～
I decided to sow hairy vetch seeds in the fruit tree area by referring to the blogs of various people.
First, my husband pulled out the weeds that were frowing persistently. This work too almost a month, and we could not finish sowing the seeds by the end of October. I hope this is not too late and the buds will come out properly.
Also, I suppose the seeds should be covered with soil, but since the soil is too hard to dig, we just pour water around and lightly tread on.
Even under such condition, the seeds we sowed earlier begin to sprout in a week or two.
They grow a lttile sparsely, so we may additionally scatter the surplus seeds in March.
Anyway, we expect hairy vetch will be very useful to control weeds next spring and summer.
掘り炬燵の布団カバー / Cloth cover for kotatsu futon
畳の部屋に掘りごたつがあり、そのこたつ布団のカバーが花柄で、あまり畳の部屋に合わないように思っていたので、一念発起し、買ったミシンを活用して、和柄でカバーを作りました！だんだん寒くなってきているので、冬に間に合ってよかった！
Kotatsu is a Japanese heating appliance in a form of low table. Electric heating is attached under the table, and a futon (bed comforter) is spread out and covered to keep the warm air inside the futon and under the table. There are mainly two types, a dig kotatsu, where the floor is cut down so that the legs can be bent and the floor can be seated like a chair, and a flat kotatsu, where the floor is at the same height.
It is often said that when you put your legs in the kotatsu, you never want to go out and fall asleep… This is so comfortable in winter.
We have a dig kotatsu in Tatami room. This is very useful, we can use this just as a table in summer, while in winter, it is a must item to get warm.
This kotatsu has a futon with the fabric of floral pattern that we didn’t like that much because we thought the pattern doesn’t go with the Japanese tatami room.
As such, I decided to make a futon cover with a fabric of Japanese patterns using the sewing machine I boutht and just finished before winter comes! How is it?
花壇の植栽１ / Flowerbed planting 1
花壇に土が入り、生垣もできたので、花壇に何を植えるか考えました。
10月はまさに植え付けに適した時期です。
週末しか世話できないので、素敵でローメンテナンスな花壇を目指し、以下の方針をたてました。
- 一年草よりは多年草もしくは宿根草を植え、一度植えたら数年はそのまま、もしくは少しの世話でいいようにする。
- 年間を通して鑑賞する植物があるようにする。
- なるべく日本古来もしくは古くに渡来した植物を植えて和風の花壇にする。（その方が環境に適していてよく育ちもするし）
- 花壇が広くて草花だけでは全面に植えられないので、すでに植わっている桜や梅の邪魔にならない低木も植える。
- 花壇の前面や縁はグランドカバープランツを植え、雑草が花壇に侵入するのを防ぐ。また、植物と植物の間もなるべく雑草が生えないように、グランドカバープランツを植える。
- 隣の畑との境界にある擁壁に近い部分は土が乾きにくく苔が生えやすいので、そういった環境が好きなグランドカバープランツを植える。
以上を考慮して、調べに調べて植物を選びました。
植物の開花時期、花や葉や実の色、背丈、耐寒性、耐暑性、水やりの頻度、日なた／日陰、原産地、剪定、施肥、病害虫、増やし方・・・などをExcelの表にまとめました。（現時点で200行を超え、我ながらマメだと思います。）
As the flowerbed was filled with soil and hedges were created, I started to think about what to plant in the flowerbed. October is a good time to plant. Since I can only take care of my garden on weekends, I made the following policy with the aim of creating a nice and low-maintenance flowerbed.
- Planting perennials rather than ephemeral plants so that, once planted, we can leave them alone for several years or take care of them a little.
- Having plants to appreciate throughout the year.
- Planting those Japanese native or came in ancient times in order to make Japanese-style flower beds. (Also, they are more suitable for the environment and grow well)
- Since the flowerbed is wide and flowers cannot be planted on the entire surface, we also plant shrubs that do not interfere with the cherry blossoms and apricots that have already been planted.
- Using ground cover plants on the front and edges of the flowerbed to prevent weeds from invading the flowerbed. Also, planting them between plants so that weeds can hardly grow.
- Since the soil is hard to dry and moss grows easily in the part near the retaining wall on the border with the adjacent garden, we plant ground cover plants that like such an environment.
Considering the above, I paid a lot of effort to research and select the plants.
Excel table showing the flowering time of plants, color of flowers, leaves and fruits, height, cold resistance, heat resistance, frequency of watering, sun / shade, place of origin, pruning, fertilization, pests, how to increase, etc. I summarized it in. (At the moment, there are more than 200 lines, already…)
収穫の秋 – さつまいも・人参 / Autumn Harvest – Sweet potatoes & Carrots
ライ麦をすき込んで、畑の準備が整ってすぐの５月末に、近所の方に頂いたさつま芋の苗を６株植えましたが、10月に入り、収穫のときがやってきました！
4ヶ月の間、まったく何の世話もせず、ほったらかしでしたが、よく育って豊作です。いも掘りをするのは小学校の遠足以来で、とても懐かしい！
食べきれない量の芋を収穫できました。焼き芋、さつまいもご飯の他、スイートポテトも作ってみましたが、なかなかお店で売っているような美味しいスイーツは作れませんね。。。
That was in Late May when we finished the rye plow-in and the soil in the kitchen garden became ready, we planted 6 sweet potato seedlings that a neighbor gave us.
And now in October, it’s the time to harvest! During four months, we didn’t take care of anything at all, but sweet potatoes grew up well and had good harvests.
We dug potatoes, that was since an elementary school excursion.
As we were able to harvest an inedible amount of potatoes, I tried making roasted sweet potatoes, rice with sweet potatoes and confectionery sweet potatoes. I like this but I can’t quite make delicious sweets like those sold at stores.
人参は７月に種まきしました。9月に間引いたときはまだ小さかったのですが、10月には大きく育ち、とても味の濃い、いい人参を収穫できました！
We sowed carrot seeds in July. It was still small when we thinned out in September, but now in October it grew enough and has a very strong taste!
庭造り計画の更新 / Updated Gardening Plan
庭造りの一番最初 に、夫が将来、自力で小屋を建てると言うので外庭を２分割しましたが、私の担当エリアをさらに３区画に分けました。畑（キッチンガーデン）、果樹エリアと花壇です。
また、昔、使われていたと思われる塀と扉が残っているので、これを庭造りに活かせないかと思い、扉をくぐり抜けて塀に沿って歩く道を作り、壁沿いには朝顔などの蔓植物を植えたら面白いかなと思いました。
あと、前から憧れている藤棚が庭にあればいいなと思い、夫に作れないか聞いてみたところ、できる！（はず）とのことだったので、これも作る想定にしました。
庭のデザインをいろいろと考えるのは難しいけれども楽しいです。
At the very beginning of the gardening plan , my husband said that he would build a cabin on his own in the future, so we divided the outer garden into two areas.
Then, I further divided my area into three, kitchen garden, fruit tree area and flower bed.
Walls and a door are left in the north side of the garden, which should have been used in the past. So I thought that it would be interesting if we use that leavings in the garden. We may have a small path along the wall so that people can walk trough the door to the path, and we may plant some vine plants along the wall.
Also, I have been longing for having a wisteria pergola in the garden. I asked my husband if he could make it, and he said he could do it! So I take this idea as well.
Considering the garden design is difficult, but rather, exciting!
